Native Plant Fertilisers

Native Australian plants usually grow in nutrient deficient soils, often particularly low in phosphorus. This led to the opinion that fertilisers should not be applied to them.

This is not true, all plants, includind Australia native plants require macro nutrient elements nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) and micro-nutrients.

However, the relatively high level of phosphorus in standard fertilisers can be dangerous to some Australian phosphorus-sensitive plants. This is particularly true of many members of the Protea family such as Banksia, Grevillea, Telopea and Hakea.
