Fipronil kills insects when they eat it or come in contact with it. Fipronil works by disrupting the normal function of the central nervous system in insects. 

Fipronil exhibits a >500-fold selective toxicity to insects over mammals. That's why it is an active ingredient of one of the popular ectoparasiticide veterinary products, Frontline. Frontline is commonly used on dogs and cats to kill fleas, and all stages of ticks.
